A Brief 'Do Rag' History

Before the 1930's, the durag (various spellings) was created from pure necessity. Scarves and cotton we're shaped and styled to cover the head, which inspired the design we know today. In the ea 1940's, barbers, and stylists created and produced their own designs and provided them to customers independently.

By the early 90's, Korean beauty supply stores shifted their home-to-home wig businesses, into storefronts – often empty due to redlining in the south. As the demand for the durag increased shop owners who once bought durags and bonnets directly from Afro-American business owners, began producing them overseas. This is where the production and revenue  of the once black-owned design shifted hands.

The early 2000's popularized durags even more by introducing designs made from cotton blends, nylon, satin, and velvet. This cemented the durag as an A.A. cultural staple – further driving sales into Asian-owned beauty supermarkets and salons.

Today, we are retiring the rag and replacing it with a CROWN. Not to downplay its history, but to celebrate it into the future. Because freedom of the mind, body, and spirit looks good on us! Let's wear it proudly!
